No message could have been any clearer- If you want your snakes to think nicer things, take a look at yourself and make the change
Nananaaaa na na naaa nanaaa.
I do not see anything in Modests life that would inherently make one interpreation more likely.
I do see this tendency to asume one is without flaw/fault all across humanity. Why would it be different for other sentient species?
She’s too innocent, bad things don’t occur to her. I think it’s pretty clear the snakes are a separate, and much more intelligent, personality or personalities.
By treating the snakes as a part of her, Glados is at least setting herself up to be the dominant personality whether she’s right or not. She’s sort of getting a jump start on the merging process and taking the reigns from the beginning. Smart move in the end. You can’t lose to someone else if you’re both you, of course you’ll win!
I think it might be a little bit of both. Their mom’s snakes said they were a part of her but they were always at odds with what the body said and wanted. It wasn’t until she got her heart broken that she shriveled up and the snakes took over. Trying to subjugate them probably isn’t the best idea but neither is letting them run wild.
So she’s suggesting that the Medusa’s, in order to try and push their flaws onto another, to say ‘the devil made me do it’, created the idea that their snakes are the ones who make them do bad things. Meanwhile, Glados is so disillusioned, she’s accepted that bad thoughts or actions that she has or does are no one’s fault but her own. THAT is a VERY grown up way of thinking. “The devil had nothing to do with it, I make my own choices and accept that responsibility” method of thinking.
I’m still not entirely convinced “Medusa” (meaning the personality that talks to other people, not the snakes) actually has a brain, at all. I mean that literally. Whether or not there is any brain in that squishy head almost doesn’t even matter. Even if she turns out to have one, totally integrated and centralized brain, that controls all the snakes, and her head, or if she has four, or five (or seven) almost independent brains, that doesn’t matter (humans, for instance, have, in one central location, a brain made up of several different lobes that function almost independently…interestingly enough, the two frontal lobes are almost a redundancy each capable of muddling through the “other’s job” if they need to, each normally controlling one half of the body…they normally pass information back and forth so much, that it looks like there is only one personality…but sometimes it is medically necessary to cut most of their direct connections and they STILL function like “one person,” they just do a lot of communication out where other humans can see it…dolphins shut down their brain sector by sector, to sleep, cephalopods have a separate brain almost as large and complex as the central one for each arm yet execute extremely complex actions requiring dexterity and planning that would make a cat burgler envious…). It is entirely possible that the “Medusa” we know, is just an emergent function of the “snakes” reaching a consensus, that her “head” is literally empty and if you scanned, say, radioactive sugar use, by the snakes (wherever the thinking-meat that runs them happens to be…in each of the little heads, in the big one, in the centre of the “torso,” wherever) as she solves a math problem, that you MIGHT see separate areas working on the problem…or you might see the SAME area is doing the same job for all FIVE of her heads. It still doesn’t matter.
I think that Marilith and JacksonKudoh has the right outlook.
Of course, it is the bitter, cynical one, who has the right attitude (if we are right), and it might be fun to argue if her demeanor caused her perception, vise versa, or if they developed in lock-step, and whether or not that “cynical” schema is the key to the happiest outcome.
More interesting stuff. Thanks. I tend to think of Marah’s imagined diagram from early season 2 as being accurate, that Modest’s head is probably “empty”.
The devil made me do it is a thing for those who are possessed but possessed people from my experience are mostly just made to suffer physically and spiritually because of it they don’t do anything out of the ordinary compared to just before the possession. However when people do bad things it is because they are deceived by the devil to believe at that moment that it is ok to do it, it’s not that they don’t want to do it, it is that they believe that it is ok, case and point Adam and Eve didn’t eat of the tree until they were deceived into believing it was ok for them to eat it but that doesn’t mean yhey didn’t want to eat the friut, just like people today being told you can’t have something even if you didn’t want it before often times make them want it even more.
Anyway my view is that while the snakes are a part of her they are not the same as her, notice the aunt didn’t have any other snakes on her which would mean at some point they were consumed or they fell off.
While I want this to be true, one of the snakes aced the school test, while Modest failed it… which indicates separate intellects or at least a split psyche/personalities.
The snakes are extensions of the medusa, and a mirror of the self. The only evil to be found in that darkness is that which we take with us.
I’m looking at the snake in the mirror. I’m asking him to change his ways.

Your aunt seems cool with it!
(Typo in panel 2: think[s])
Unfortunately I have to disagree with her, since Modest’s life (which none of these Medusas have seen) would support Science’s claim

We also see from Momdusa’s flashbacks that one of the snakes eventually consumes the medusa.
Que Science catching them with their snakes unbounded
Glados seems to be fairly wise. Interesting, considering she was raised with the others, unlike Modest…
I like Glados.
I wonder if this is true.
I hope this is true.

The aunt seems nice, after all.

Only problem with that is that Modest doesn’t have enough of a brain (to put it very bluntly) to come up with the things her snakes can do/have done.

Somewhat reminds me of Nightman comics (Where he fights Loki and gets many doubles because of many different choices he could make)
My snakes tell me to do hood rat stuff. It’s fun to do bad things with snakes! Snakin’ wit cigawettes..
