– Back from Seattle. Sorry for the late strip. geek Girl Con was fun, but also an ordeal!
– The digital version of The Magical Land of Yeld RPG is now available for sale. You can get it from the Modest Medusa store, DrivethruRPG/RPGNOW or Indie Press Revolution(soon). Books should be available for sale in December.
Wow, this was really intense. I read/heard it as though Modest had been near an explosion, where everyone talking is all muffled and there is a high pitch ringing noise in the background. Then, suddenly, it all stops in the last panel as the last voice is heard crystal clear.
That was what I was thinking.
Dear God! You captured my feelings perfectly, though I didn’t place the shellshock ringing til you mentioned it!
i would say modest is in shock, but that movement of hands is making it seem like she is going full evil neutral. That or she is just freaking the hell out on the inside. I would say the latter, but one never knows
She seems in shock, probably at the fact that she just killed someone. The hand movement brings to mind old plays where, after their first kill, people look at their hands in disgust and say things like, “With these two hands, it was I. I am left and he is gone. Never more to walk this earth.” or several scenes after the murder, “My hands, I’ve washed them so. But still, in my eyes I see them red. Will I never see my hands clean again for what I have done?” Or something like that.
No, those hands movement come from the subconscious in order to keep moving when the rest of you is frozen in shock. It keeps you from going crazy, or at least slows it down.
I know what that’s like.
It seems more to me like she’s wringing her hands due to anxiety or nerves.
Nobody dies in Pokemon. “It was super effective” becomes “I didn’t mean it”.
I half expected that to end with her in the same pose standing in front of the class
The second panel reads “She did this too him?”
Huh. Death isn’t a new thing to Modest. But… death at her hands certainly is. I wonder if that’s what made her zone out… or, the fact that the “bad guy,” apparently, wasn’t all that bad, in the end.
I take it the fact that she just killed someone isn’t sitting well with her. Even if it was in self defense.
Yep, that’s about the amount of shock you’d expect from someone going through that. A lot of fiction skips over shock to “get on with the story” or possibly because the authors don’t know how shock usually affects people. Which is a pity, because it’s a great way to demonstrate character growth, or contrast between the villains and heroes.
You can suffer shock even when nobody is actually hurt, like I did one time. I was parking my car and a guy was on a motorcycle in my blind spot and I did not see him until it was too late. It was just a tiny tap, the guy wasn’t hurt at all, and the bike wasn’t even seriously damaged, but just the thought that I might have seriously hurt a guy I couldn’t even see put me into shock for several minutes.
I hope Auntie’s words are not her last ones, I hate dying speeches
Wow that’s powerful…
On a lighter note, can I get a larger version of that Yeld cover? It would make a great desktop pattern!
I’ll release a larger version at some point.
