Those are Naga’s snakes. All adult Hydra have them. They’re the 3 snakes that DIDN”T become dominant (although we only see two here). If you look back at the Gorgon you’ll see she has them too.
I blinked at “brother” (since the Hydra life cycle seems to have established that they’re all female), but then I realized that Naga’s brother is from the adoptive family.
I was just wondering. In the age when the Serpent God was more active, was it common for Hydra to be raised by extended family. Otherwise it seems difficult for them to have had thriving society with such a limited ability to transfer knowledge across generations.
In the distant past, way before the Old Kings, when Yeld was mostly inhabited by Fairies, Hydra were a bit more common, and there were great Serpent Temples where they lived as Oracles of the Serpent God. These Temples were sometimes the centers of cities and towns, or places where people went on pilgrimage. They were also centers of learning and communication, and some became Yeld’s first universities. The routes between temples became Yeld’s first roads, and the origin of Yeld’s complicated mail system.
Young Hydra mostly grew up in temples, and often around a large variety of people. Fairies, Animal Tribes, Old Witches, the demons of Loh Tabeth, Hunters in Darkness and other strangeness. Dragons too. Sometimes Hydra children would be sent off to foster with other families, so they could grow into their own territories. That became more common later.
I really need to write a big book about how everything in Yeld works.
So love is the secret to not going snake-y.
But Momdusa was loved by Chainsaw Unicorn
Having a family business is the secret to not going snake-y.
This will end in tears, won’t it?
A new species in Yeld – the bear people.
These are just Fairies without war markings and armor.
What’s with the small snakes in the last pane?

“Snakes in a pane.” *snerk!*
So what happened? We *will* hear about it, won’t we?
Initially I thought those were dolphins in that last panel.
Considering this is Yeld, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were animals that looked like fish-sized dolphins.

I talked about this a bit before somewhere…
