– Hi everyone. I’d like to mention that you can support my work on Patreon or Ko-fi (or by ordering stuff from my store). I’m sure you won’t be surprised to find that I don’t make much. Since the pandemic money has been especially tight, and I’ve had to spend more and more time on freelance work and commissions to pay the bills. Which means less time making comics and art for you all to enjoy. Recently things have improved a little due to several very generous readers, but I could still use your support. If you can spare a small monthly contribution through Patreon or a tip through Ko-fi I’d really appreciate. Your support directly help finance both my comics work and pay my living expenses!
Cute boy, he’s so scrumptious! Nom-nom!
I think I know what’s going on and I’m not sure the girls are going to like it.
Is this a Mermaid thing or a Jenny thing?
As we will see it is a Mermaid thing.
Luring men to their watery deaths?
Well, that is something they do. But no.
Oh boy. With what I know about mermaid mythology… This could be bad
Is it because Mermaids are usually female?
Yeah. No boy Mermaids. So mermaids end up being fascinated with boys and often try to make friends with them when they’re young (when the mermaids are young, I mean). Girls too, of course. Mermaids are designed to be very social.
Also, Mermaids always give birth to other Mermaids. So again, no boys. So a lot of mermaids think boys are pretty neat. And children in general, really. Since Mermaids are mostly trained for war and don’t have much of a childhood. A lot of Mermaids who escape the Deep and come to live in the Kingdom end up working with children or adopting them.
So glad it’s that and not a case of killer mermaids
Well… I mean Mermaids do kill a lot of people in Yeld. But that’s not what’s happening here.
Jenny is not allowed to be nice xD though to be fair, bias isn’t actually nice.
Oh no, Nice Jenny’s cast a rift in the natural order! Reality as they knew it is gone! xD
I hope that this doesn’t mean Jenny’s a, well, I’m not sure if I should say it in the comments of a child friendly webcomic, let’s just say that they’re usually shown as men but women can be them too.
No, no.
Oh thank god.
I am glad I wasn’t the only one who had that concern, also glad she’s not. Not that I think Jake would permit that in his comic world.
It would be a weird thing to bring into the comic.
Jake responded to me that it’s a Mermaid thing. From what I remember of mermaid lore, they like males for the sake of eating, and lure them in with charm and glamour
Thats a pretty common part of Mermaid lore, and it is something that happens in Yeld. Mermaids were purposely designed by the Deep to look attractive to the armies of the Prince. But that’s not what’s happening here. Jenny just thinks boys are cool. Like an aunt meeting her nephew for the first time.
So that’s the explanation for why they are all female. I’m guessing that if there were ever any males then it would be because the Deep made them for a more specific reason. (Or possibly made through alchemical experiments by third party mere mortals, possibly mermaids themselves, if that’s a thing that happens in Yeld.)
The Deep never made any male Mermaids, but there are Trans Mermaids.
The full story of Mermaids is that they were designed to be pioneers and occupiers by the Deep in it’s war against Dragul. The Deep designed dozens of different war creatures. Squidfolk are meant for more common soldiery and Shipwrecker Queens are anti-ship combatants. Mermaids are meant to colonize land and hold ground. They’re created to be soldiers, know magic and are stronger than King’s People and can live in and out of the water. They are also meant to breed with the local population and produce more Mermaids. So the plan is to seize ground and hold it if they can, or mix with the local population and raise more soldiers if they can’t. The later plan has mixed results because it turns out a lot of Mermaids are scared shitless of the Deep (as we saw with Jenny) and really like living on land away from it where they mostly get to do whatever they want.
Anyway, the Deep never made male Mermaids because thats not what they’re for. There are male and female Squidfolk though. Male Shipwreckers too.
I’m gonna laugh if she just has powerful maternal instincts for any child who isn’t the protagonist. You know, like a cat honing in on the one person who doesn’t like cats.
Thats my experience with cats.
A predatory predator.
