My new Kickstarter launched this weekend and I’d really appreciate your support. We had an okay firstweek and we’re about 1/2 funded, but I’m really hoping we can reach our goal soon. The project is called Mermaid Hunters and its a starter set for the Yeld RPG my brother and I released last year. The set comes in a box like a board game (and includes a board and pieces) and is perfect for kids ad people who are new to gaming. In the game you play kids (and their dog) from our world who discover a magical door to Yeld and come face to face with a gang of mermaids.
I think the project is a lot of fun, and we made sure to make it affordable (the game is just $35) so that its easy to try out and makes a great gift! You can check out the Kickstarter here. I’d really appreciate your support!
Apparently, the tentacles only work with a crab and a fish nearby.
Its not the octopus specifically (thats what it is, a big octopus) but all the sea life thats dragging her down.
So fishs and crabs are terrible Monster ?!
Omg , we have to respect them and not eat them , OR WE WILL ALL DIE !!!!
A mysterious blue-haired cutie-pie appears!
Bang bang, finger bang baby! Or in this case “finger shlizzt” which sounds even naughtier somehow.
Sigh. It does.
You can always replace that with a more classic comics inspired “Zzzzt”, “zapp”, or “crackle”.
I like to avoid default sound effects.
edit: I feel like a classic sound effect is mostly ignored. The reader doesn’t consider the actual sound. they just see the effect and fill n the blank with a loony tunes or batman sound. I want my readers to actually read the sound effect and her that sound in their mind, so I try to create sound effects that replicate the actual sound (or sometimes the sensation of the action) instead of the more flat and established sound effects that a reader might be used to.
Does that make sense? maybe it doesn’t matter.
Bzaaowww!
[Buh-s-ow(extended ow)]
That definitely makes sense. I like the way you create sound effects, it gives the feeling that you put much effort in your world and it’s cool to “hear” them!
Makes perfect sense. A new sound does get attention and adds another dimension to the whole effect. Classic sounds are fine, but I think most people associate them with commonplace effects. Snap, crackle, pop!
It (shlizzt) isn’t a lewd sound, I was just making a finger-bang joke 😀
This hat … Didn’t I Saw it on the good giant snake ? Did the witch will have thé mermaid and will Ask to her to selle thèse hat , if I am right , that would mean that mean we will … Well what this mean ? Did I may have accidently spoilers too much ?
Its not the same hat, although it is the same style. The one Naga had was red. its a common style of hat worn by spell casters.
Speaking of hats, why is the mermaid wearing a trash can lid? It’s only missing the handle on top.
She’s not.
Yeah I already assumed that it was an octopus, but was it already there and she just called it up or did she summon it along with that sea life from the ocean through a portal? And is she mentally dominating it or is it trained to obey her commands? And how are the fish and crabs helping? It looks like they’re just they’re just floating around, and why doesn’t the oathbreaker just cut off the tentacles and stab the bulbous head or whatever it’s called?
I gotta ask this again: how come there’s so much all female races in fantasy these daysbut rarely any all male races?
The spell collects all the sea life in the area and commands to to overwhelm teh target. The crabs and fish or contributing their weight and mass. This is all happening very fast, so Kiandra doesn’t have a chance to respond yet.
I think you’re underestimating the number of all-male races in fantasy. Theres been a lot. Theres also been a lot of races that aren’t all male but we never really see the females at all. But also, historically all female races are often a response to there being fewer female characters at all in fantasy.
I meant in current time, I heard there was alot more male races back in the day but that doesn’t look like the case now.
Again, I disagree. Some modern examples:
– In the Underworld movies the werewolves are all male.
– The Centaurs from the Hercules and Xena TV series are all male.
– The Jem’Hadar from Start Trek Deep Space Nine are all male.
– Satyrs from Dungeons & Dragons are all male.
– Orks in Warhammer 40K are all male. So are Space Marines.
– Galka in Final Fantasy 11 were all male. So were the Roegadyn in FF 14 during the original version of the game.
– Gorons in the Zelda games appear to be all male and refer to each other as “Brother”.
– Smurfs are all male.
– So were transformers for a very long time.
Those are mostly just from the top of my head. I bet a google search would bring up a lot more examples.
Eh, that just proves my point about back in the day, I’m talking about this decade (that’s almost over) the 10s, and maybe to a lesser extant the 00s Idunno. It just seems like whenever I get on the internet I stumble upon a fantasy race that’s all female but never with all males. And to top it off, now they’re reimagining all those originally all male races with females, like centaurs and satyrs, usually when they’re in the monstergirl genre. Lastly I’ve heard that thing about the transformers being all male, I know this is off topic but it’s worth mentioning: maybe Rebecca Sugar grew up with that version and was partially inspired to make a girl version of them the same way that they made She-Ra based off of He-Man. So yeah, my personal headcannon is that the gems are the female counterparts of the transformers, even though they’re both genderless and don’t exist in the same universe. (There’s technically several Transformer universes, I know.)
The Smurfs were mostly male. Smurfette was there too.
Oh, and great comic today, can’t wait see what happens next.
Smurfette was an artificial creation of Gargamel.
Is that a Dragon Warrior reference?
Yes.
Let’s hope the Hand of Autumn doesn’t know “Stopspell,” in that case.
She knows “Shield”, as we saw in this strip. She doesn’t need to speak her spells.
Hurt, my second-favorite spell!
(My favorite is Hurtmore!)
I still prefer the Johnny Cash cover of this spell.
Ooooh, I like the mage. I’ll have to remember to make her costume one day when my sewing skills improve.
Is “hurt” a command in this case? Like “look upon me and weep!” or something? Or is it a spell?
Its a spell. Most (but not all) of the spell casters in Yeld need to say then name of their spells to cast them. If you look back earlier this season you’ll see Modest struggling with this, and the new Abolisher speaking the name of his spells.
Unrelated to my previous response post above, have you considered doing anything about the auto resize – downscaling of your comic art on this website?
I mentioned to you before that on Firefox, even if I expand my browser to max size at my resolution of 1920 x 1080, the boundary container the comic is posted in doesn’t allow the comic resolution to expand past a certain point, and only by right clicking the comic and selecting ‘view image’ can I actually see the comic at it’s full, pretty resolution scale.
This is a problem since your art is really nice and it hurts it having it be displayed at less than it’s proper scale, plus scaling artifacts make it look rougher than it is.
I basically have no ability to do anything with my site at this time. When I can afford to I’ll hire someone to address the many problems the site has (which may involve completely rebuilding it from scratch), but since i’m very poor I don’t expect that to be anytime soon. All my income goes to rent and food right now, and all my time is spent working.
I appreciate that the way the comic is currently presented is less than ideal for some readers. I’m sorry. I’m doing my best.
Trying to joke … I HAVE NO IDEA ;_;
Oh yeah, why doesn’t that metal bit weigh the hat down or anything?
It’s a magic hat.
Love the Dragon Warriors reference. ❤️👍
Neat to see more of the default characters from the game appearing in the comic.
URL is off again — looks like instead of “part 15”, this became a second “part 14”, which became “part-14-2” in the URL.
I was able to fix it. I think I must have mislabeled it as part 14.
Ohhh… The gang’s almosts all heres! *Mews!* >o.o<
It hadn’t really clicked until now, but viewed straight-on, that metal decoration on the top of a Yeld traditional mages hat looks a lot like the thickly armored head of a fully-adult hydra.
It does, right? That’s just a coincidence, but its neat.
