– Today is my birthday! I’m going to celebrate by working on a Ghost Kiss comic that’s been a “work in progress” since last year.
– Hi everyone. I’d like to mention that you can support my work on Patreon or Ko-fi (or by ordering stuff from my store). I’m sure you won’t be surprised to find that I don’t make much. Since the pandemic money has been especially tight, and I’ve had to spend more and more time on freelance work and commissions to pay the bills. Which means less time making comics and art for you all to enjoy. Recently things have improved a little due to several very generous readers, but I could still use your support. If you can spare a small monthly contribution through Patreon or a tip through Ko-fi I’d really appreciate. Your support directly help finance both my comics work and pay my living expenses!
Happy Birthday!
I can relate to Modest, learning you’re made of something and have things inside you is terrifying xD bones, skeletons, muscles, cells…
Especially since as a child I’ve had them explained to me as “It’s muscles that move your body, not you” and “Cells are their own living beings and they make up your body”.
Modest’s horror here is only the beginning.
Yeah, I had a very poor reaction in first grade (about Modest’s age) when I first learned about my body. I KNEW what bones and muscles were, kind of. But seeing pictures was really disturbing, and learning that my body was just a bunch of meat and bones all squeezed together in a skin tube was upsetting.
Sometimes it helps to just think of people as big, crunchy sausages.
Found the cannibal everyone!
There’s a great kids book series “Uncover a *”. Where * is everything from Snakes to Sharks to Dogs to a T. Rex. Each page has a different layer of the organism. Skin, bones, cardio, nerves, etc. Taught me, among other things, that snakes have two lungs; one is full size and the other tiny. My niece and nephews love them.
I have seen those, or something similar. They are cool.
Modest can eat chicken bones?
Lucky…
We know she and her sisters sometimes eat animals whole.
Given how snake like they can be I’m surprised they dont have an ostrich or emu farm going for the eggs to swallow whole. Or some Yeld equivalent giant magic chicken.
They might!
Humans can digest bones just fine, they’re just not vary nice to eat. And there generally isn’t a need for that much calcium. Chicken marrow is pretty tasty though, and the big leg bones are relatively easy to crack open.
“they’re just not vary nice to eat.”
i thought it could be dangerous to swallow cooked bones?
Most carnivores can eat raw bones, and a few can eat them cooked.
Technically all bones are edible. Most birds, however, have hollow bones to reduce their weight and make it easier to fly. Those same pockets that make the bones lighter also make them much more prone to splintering when they’re eaten, and the bone splinters can cause some pretty nasty cuts and puncture wounds in your digestive system. That’s why you don’t want to feed chicken bones to your dog.
Hold up!
The fear of skeletons comes from the knowledge that it’s the remains of a dead person. If someone doesn’t know about human bones, I don’t think they’d have any fear or uneasiness about skeletons.
Yeld has skeletons roaming around killing people.
That is… an excellent point. lol
Wait, Modest has teeth! Teeth are bones!
I wonder if they can get her X-rayed. I could see issues getting doctors involved. The locals have gotten used to Modest or don’t pay attention, but I’m surprised having a small hydra wondering about hasn’t attracted more attention.
If I remember right, Jake has said that Modest Medusa takes place in the same universe as his Ghost Kiss comic, so people are a bit desensitized to supernatural things.
A snake’s digestive system can digest everything on animals except teeth, hair, and feathers.
At least it’s not a whole Skeletor.
Fun fact: brushing your teeth is just cleaning your skeleton. Don’t do a good job and your skeleton gets mad, jumps out and leaves. That’s why they’re always so grumpy when found in dungeons: they’ve realized they now need toothpaste all over but can’t buy any!
This factoid brought to you by that 1 dentist that doesn’t sign off on all of the normal things the usual 4 out of 5 do. Brush your teeth, kids.
ha
*Most* fish have bones. Sharks, skates and rays don’t (they’re called “cartilaginous fishes)
Well, now I have to ask about her teeth.
Are those teeth, or are they some kind of squid beak thing?
I think they’re probably teeth. I don’t think Hydra anatomy evolved naturally.
And every heartbeat is the skeleton trying to get out!
