AAAAAHHHHH TO MUCH EMOTION!!!
Hrrrmmm..? She’s not turning to stone? I don’t remember how fast it happened last time but maybe Gina’s made of the tough stuff. Or maybe turning stuff to stone’s based her personal sense of danger, or specific to Yeld or, something else only a doctor for magic snake people would understand.
The pink mermaid was bitten by at least three of the snakes and there was bit of a delay before she started turning. I don’t know if you need a certain amount of venom for it to work or even even one is enough to turn you to stone.
Keep in mind that the Pink Mermaid was a full grown adult. Gina is a child, and thus significantly smaller. It could easily take less venom to begin the petrification process.
Just looked it up. It took 3 strips which supposedly covered a fair amount of time (15-30 seconds) and the hair bit the mermaid at least 3 times. Even after that it was a gradual process that took maybe 10 seconds.
It didn’t happen immediately last time… and there was more than one bite.
So it’s still possible that she will turn into stone, and still a chance that one bite is not enough.
Precisely what I suspected. Good eye, old chap!
Or the snake didn’t inject its poison.
Real life isnt about auto procing game abilities. And poison takes a lot of energy to make. Snakes like being able to tell people to bugger off without wasting valuable poison.
Well, I found the comics in the archive and the mermaid was bitten at least three times, so maybe once won’t be enough?
As for how fast it works, she was bitten, then we cut away to Marah and the other mermaid fighting underwater with the sword, and then when they resurface the bitten mermaid is starting to turn. So…it happens pretty fast, but maybe not quite instantaneously.
It was already explained, her magic doesn’t work outside Yeld.
awwww… I really wanted her to turn to stone though! It would have made for great character development!
We know you’re sorry, but sorry ain’t gonna fix this. Sorry can’t take back what’s been done.
The stone reaction seems to be less immediate than before. Or is it just poor memory?
She was only bit once, by a single snake. The mermaid (was her name Barb? Deb?) was bit several times by all of her snakes.
Might have something to do with it.
So… Dead? Not dead? Powers only work in Yeld?
I like the way Modest’s eyes got smaller when she realized what had happened in the last strip. It’s a nice touch to show her mental state.
Is it wrong of me to hope the mean, bully girl gets turned to stone?…cause I had to deal with people like her growing up and I won’t loose any sleep over it.
Does that make me callus or just insensitive to her needs?
I think it makes you a normal victim of bullying, people who have been bullied don’t want to hear how bad it was for the bully because that doesn’t excuse tormenting someone else. just because your lonely does not mean you get to hurt another. Many times we would like to see a bully get what they deserve for once since in school the victim is usually the one that gets punished for being a distraction. “oh I’m sorry my being tripped and falling on my face was a distraction.”
Wouldn’t call it bullying (when dealing with the people I’m thinking of; we’ve all had a bully of some sort during our lives of course). Just those whom are short with others and anti-social.
I could care less about the girl, but it would be awful for Modest. As it is, there is still a danger of her being kicked out of the school even if the other child doesn’t turn to stone—and it could completely change how the other kids treat her—including her new buddy. Then it has to be super scary and upsetting to as I’m sure she’s remembering the trauma of turning the mermaid to stone.
Well the mermaid was bitten moret than once so it could be a cumulative effect. One bite hurts … but you don’t turn to stone unless you get bitten by all her hair. Maybe?
I know there is a delay, it doesn’t turn you stone right that second. I am still wondering if this will work or not. The only ways I can think of for this not turning her is that A) she didn’t get enough venom, B) it only works on those from Yeld or with some level of magic, C) it can only work in Yeld as there seems to be magic in the air itself, D) the snakes have some way of not doing it now that they know about it. If Modest had trained in magic maybe she could cast a spell to stop it, but even if she started training already I doubt she is skilled enough to do so.
PS: Jake, I noticed one of the Medusarines has a blue claw. The one in the middle who seems to have just cut off one of the snakes.
Oh, you’re right! I missed that.
Gina is kind of a bullethead. Here Modest’s hair just bit her and now she’s shoving Modest within a perfectly accessible range of being bitten again. If she turns to stone, it’s totally Darwinism in effect.
Since the snakes are part of her, perhaps Medusa on a conscious level must have to be in a protection mode. Seeing that Gina really wasn’t going to hurt her, the hair gave her a warning shot…so to speak.
oh now things are starting to get serious on the playground! Gosh I am just going to close my eyes and not peek at the next upcoming strip. Though I seem to remember Marah getting nipped once before without undue harm…
Maybe the snake didn’t inject its venom?
Those toothmarks look a little bit too far apart. Maybe Gina bit herself just so she could pretend the hair did it. It’s the sort of jerk thing she would do.
I dunno. I mean, I understand they’re only kids and that stuff happens.. but I can’t deny I’d like to see Gina get a comeuppance.
I seem to remember Marah being bit once… And I don’t think snakes *have* to inject venom with every bite.
AHA! Found it!

I’m only just now remembering that snakes don’t ALWAYS bite with venom
Let’s hope what’s poisonous in Yeld isn’t poisonous out here in the so-called real world.
does lead to an interesting nature versus nurture discussion. we been told that the “body” and the “snakes” have separate minds before but not sure if before now we really been shown how this works and who really controls who.
before it was kind of suggested the body was there as a mask of sorts to hide the nature of the snakes ultimately being evil. this being why momdusa pretty much said that the body would wither away as the snakes took over. but do we truly know that is the only option? can the body chose to be the final form instead of the snakes?
Oh, the suspense is killing me. It doesn’t seem to have been long enough yet for the petrification to kick in yet given how long it took last time with three bites. My guess is we will find out Wednesday if it works or not.
Also if I were bitten by a snake contracting a disease would be the last thing in my mind. I think any snake that would bite you is most likely venomous.
Aww, poor Modest was just trying to protect herself. That’s it! I’m taking Modest for ice cream.
NO
JAKE WHY
WHAT MADE YOU THINK THIS WAS OKAY
I have been back to check, and the mermaid was bitten more than once, and started petrifying at an extremity away from the bite sites. Perhaps Gina hasn’t had a big enough dose. Perhaps normal humans possess a natural resistance. Perhaps Modest is going to stand there apologising until she realises that Gina isn’t going to turn to stone. Or perhaps:
Gina: Stop saying sorry! It’s not going to help anything and it’s boring! And now my stupid foot’s gone to sleep! Ugh! I can’t move it at all! It’s like it’s made of stone or something! I bet that’s your dumb fault as well! *sticks out tongue* aaagh, ‘igh ‘ung! uhgs uh ugh un ahd! uuuhhhpp!!
[…]
Meg: And then the wind changed, and she was stuck like that.
Ms. Kohli: Really.
Modest: *nods dumbly*
>:=)>
FYI: The piece of juvenile folklore referenced there is that if the wind changed while you were pulling a horrible face, your features would be stuck like that permanently.
She was only bitten once, the mermaid was bitten multiple times when she turned into stone. So it could mean A) it takes multiple bites or B) Because she was bitten once, she’ll turn into stone slowly or C) being bit once isn’t enough.
I’m supposing if the worse occurs, Gina might be taking a trip to Yeld as a statue to see big snake mama. I feel as if she’s powerful enough to reverse the damage her child can do.
And that is why Medusa has been kept inside during recess.
Normally, when someone reads as an enemy, all four snakes are baring fangs — so this twist caught me by surprise. I think it’s likely that Gina *will* be turned to stone, because otherwise I don’t see the point of this scene happening in the first place. (Unless it’s just to allow Modest to learn more about how her body works.)
We’ve already seen Charles losing an arm, Jenny Mermaid losing an eye, Debbie Mermaid getting calcified, Marah growing horns, Marah dying… So it’s definitely not “too dark” for this comic. But it does make me wonder what direction Jake is planning to take things!
It’s working a lot slower than it did on Debbie if it is working at all.
Maybe she wasn’t bit. Maybe one of the snakes just stabbed her with an ice pick. Snakes will do that.
when is asami loves korra and ghost kiss ?
New Ghost Kiss is coming soon. I’m coloring it now, so next week maybe? Hopefully i’ll have some new Asami Loves Korra by the end of the month.
Jake you watching every comment ?
I always read every comment.
do you like azumanga daioh that much ?
I do.
guessing she isnt going to get petrified like the mermaid, because no magic outside yeld, but, the snake venom might do some other strange thing. like get people really really stoned.
