I should have had hair hissing. The idea is that all three of them are shouting it. Hair too. Its just that Hair’s version sounds like a hiss.

How could Gene have studied for a surprise test? Presumably he’s no worse off than anyone else in the class.
I think Gene meant he should have studied more in general. General study prepares you for surprise tests.
