Gene’s never heard of these games?
Gene strikes me as the type who thinks all gaming is Pokemon and/or Minecraft.
They are, to be fair, of the age where it is entirely reasonable they have never encountered a fighting game before. Fighting games are not widely known, and several of these series stopped being popular before they were born.
They’re also at the age where their parents likely wouldn’t want them playing those kinds of games due to the rating.
I’ve never played or seen much of Guilty Gear so I don’t know what it’s like, but Soul Calibur and (ESPECIALLY) Mortal Kombat aren’t really the sort of thing that most parents would want their young children playing.
I agree. I wouldn’t want kids that age playing MK. Especially a modern one.
But… my younger siblings did playa LOT of Soul Calibur at that age.
Well that’s just adorable.

Heavily depends on what your friends are playing (or your favorite streamers). And they can’t play everything.
