Because having the fact that you are a little different pointed out first never makes introductions awkward. Some people would argue it violates the jerk rule.
Teacher: I think a better word might be “shy”. Now, deep breath, and tell the class your name! Go on!
Modest: 8-{ …
Third Serpent: …That is her name! And you can call me Sam. Or Sammy.
Second Serpent: Hey, I was going to choose that one! Alright, I’m… Pat. Nice to meet you all!
First Serpent: I’m Sîan! Ess Iy-with-a-circumflex Ay En!
Fourth Serpent: Smartass! Well, I’m gonna be… Les – no, Viv, wait…
Teacher: *ahem* We don’t call people “smartass” in this class… …and now I’m going to have to talk to the Principal and find out whether you all need to be enrolled separately. We’re probably going to need to expand and clarify the rules against copying classmates’ work, too… 🙁

I’m sure you all saw what I did there… and while Sîan (pronounced: sharn) is an old Celtic girls’ name (female counterpart to Sîon/Séan/Shaun), it was also the name of a legendary and very male Firbolg hero from Celtic myths. Gender deniability FTW!
Keep in mind that this is her very first day in school; she’s had no pre-school or kindergarten, she’s simply no chance to acclimate to large groups of kids.
Also remember that she’s not human. Modest is a hybrid of vampire and cobra. Since her father has some human traits, so does she, but her new class presents her with something she’s never dealt with before, the alien.
And they are presented with something alien to them, Modest.
Fortunately since they are first graders they will adapt. That’s what grade school kids do. So she’s a medusa, so she has a snake’s body instead of a pelvis and legs. That’s just the way she is, Modest Medusa is still my friend. It’s not a matter of tolerating, it’s really a matter of acceptance.
Yes, but acceptance still has to overcome the hurdle of how different she is from the rest of them. Kids can be cruel. Though, Medusa’s previous contact the other day shows that she should get along.
The comic comes across awkwardly because of the eyes. The teacher’s eyes in the first two panels are expressionless. Her face comes across as terrified or emotionless, like she’s a robot. It’s weird to say this and I apologize if it’s not very helpful, but her eyes need to smile (perhaps her lips too).
Actually I now recognize what the problem is: there are no eyebrows! Or anything to replace them for an expression. That is what is causing the teacher to look terrified/emotionless in the first two panel.
So now we have the answer to whether medusas are warm or cold blooded.

You’ve gotten really good at drawing Modest’s expressions.
She’s not used to being outnumbered.
Usually she outnumbers everyone else just by herself.
“I’m Modest”
“Clearly, but what’s your name?”
Modest: I’m… Modest. 8-{

I learned something new.
A bunch of my favourite web comic authors are going to be at TCAF. This is going to be great. See you Saturday.
Hmm, “Modest” is not the same as “scared.”
See you there!
First comic yeah .love this comic by the way keep up the good work
Panel 4 is freaking adorable!

So now she is too Modest
Maybe this isn’t Modest but one of her many sisters- Stage Fright Medusa!

Lack of etebrows is sometimes a huge hurdle.
Noted. I was going for mildly annoyed, exhausted and wishing she were home on bed, but I guess that didnt come across.
uhhhhh, 42!
As long as she doesn’t get so nervous she starts biting people then everyone will turn out okay in the end.
Ooooh! ♡
