1/19 Edit: Well, I’ve been trapped at home by the ice all week. Hopefully I’ll be able to get back to the studio on Saturday.
Original post: Wow, it is cold in Portland! In fact, I THINK its the coldest it has ever been in my life!
I left the studio on Friday night, and by Saturday morning it was 9 degrees and everything was covered in ice. My bedroom was 35 degrees (just above freezing), with wind blowing through my windows like they weren’t even there. I spent all Saturday bundled up in blankets and sleeping in the living room (which was only a little warmer). When its that cold all I can really do is sleep.
Its a little warmer now. I ‘m not sure if I’ll be able to get tomorrow’s MM strip up in time sicne I’m not sure if I’ll make it in to the studio or now. So it may be posted late, or I may save it till Friday. We’ll see!
Stay warm and safe, everyone!
You need better windows and better unit of temperature.
Uh huh.
The windows are ancient. Like, from the 50’s. I’m just a renter, so they’re aren’t getting changed I think.
Let me guess, ypu have to pay the electric/heat bill? But at this rate the landlord is gonna be the one hurting for a burst pipe if the heat can’t keep up with the windows. This will happen more often too as climate change continues to destabilize the jet stream.
Nah. Its just a really old house that gets really cold. I have a space heater, but its been at the studio since last winter (since the studio also gets cold). I haven’t been able to get it yet. Anyway, the house has finally started to warm up after 2 days.
It would be nice to replace the windows, but I doubt that will happen. I do have some window coverings to put up in the winter, but I can’t seem to find them. I think I may have accidentally tossed them out.
You could try hanging some thick curtains to hang in front of the windows (or even just blankets). Won’t be as good as replacing the windows with properly insulated ones but it will make a difference.
This is exactly what I ended up doing. I pinned up two blankets and sealed teh edges with duct tape. It worked okay.
Thankfully the power is back now. Although we also lost water for awhile and our basement flooded.
Its still frozen here, but I’m going to try to get in to work.
Why do I hear the Late Again voice clip from Another Brick in the Wall? That’s not Modest’s voice at all!
