– Still no pen for the Yiynova. So I gave up and decided to color this strip with markers. Itw as fun, but it took about 7 hours. Anyway, this is what I’ll be doing till the pen shows up (which I hope will be today or tomorrow.
– I’ll be at the Rose City Comic Con in Portland on the 21st and 2nd, and the Puyallup WA library on the 28th for their mini comic con.I’m looking forward to both!

I have to say, though, the coloring looks terrific this way!
Even though it takes more time, I have to say that I love the look of the coloring.
Thanks. All told the strip took about 10 hours, which is a bit too much.
I agree–the shading and detail here is really beautiful.
Wow. That looks really nice, Jake.
It looks really awesome marker colored!
…and still no pen?
Rabble rabble rabble!
Really really awesome though, like… I lack words to describe how well this looks. Maybe later in the day I could word a description.
LOVE the colors. Too bad it takes so long.
Yeah it looks really great this way. Hope you get your pen thing soon! My mum threw one of mine away once because it, “Didn’t have any ink.”
UgH!
Is that cannon… lit?
HOW IS A LOOSE CANNON SUPPOSED TO IMPROVE MATTERS
See, Kerrigor is falling, and therefore cannot dodge, and physics states that an object can only fall so fast, in accordance with the gravitational pull. So their situation really cant get much worse, but Kerrigor’s can.
Given his proximty to the wall, he could very well kick off of it to dodge. Albeit he’d truly be in a freefall then…unless shooting fire from his hands has enough force to steer him.
Considering that he managed to reload cannon in 1-2 seconds since last shot, he is pretty awesome cannoneer
Carlos has a super power, the ability to make the worst happen by suggesting it.
You can tell it took so long considering how good the colour looks!
If only it didn’t take so long!
Hopefully the pen will come soon so this isn’t taking up all of your time
This looks amazing! Hope you get the pen tho, I know between the marker fumes and the crippling hand cramps that this was a labor of love.
Just wanted to add my voice to the ‘this looks cool’ crowd. But I understand you don’t want to spend that much time per strip.
I wish I could, but doing it this way would probably add an extra 15 hours of work every week. I may use the markers sometimes though.
Flaming hostile Kerrigor colors are amazing. Nice work.
You know, recoloring some special past comics (mostly those with dynamic scenes) with markers like this would be an amazing thing to add to the book collections. This practically looks like a painting. So just doing it for those few special comics that have a great scene, since you’ve said it takes a long time to do it, would be a neat addition to the books.
Something to consider.
Substitute Fan Dialogue:
Captain: “Carlos…”
Carlos: “Yes, Captain.”
Captain: ” *sigh*…Just Shut Up!”
“Please… for the love of God!”
BY the way…
THE COLOR LOOKS AMAZING!!!!!! I looks very 3-D like. š
“God…dammit,Carlos.” LOL
“Dammit Carlos!” Now in technicolor vision!
Wow, the colours on this one are great. What kind of markers did you use? I’m honestly having a little difficulty believing this wasn’t done on the PC, instead of real-world markers. It looks really smooth, without any of the usual “bleed-over” you’d expect to see.
Copic markers. There actually is a fair amount of bleed and smudging if you look close.
Oh, wow… I see. Those are usually really, really expensive… but the quality makes it look like it’s worth it.
And, yeah… if you look really closely, there are a few smudges… but you almost have to be looking ~for~ smudges, to find them.
I got so used to him being a black knight that now it is a little off putting to see him that way. Other than that so glad the colors are back, they make everything pretty
The scan came out kind of washed out and saturated, and I couldn’t really fix it. But in the original art he’s a darker red.
Wow… For what it’s worth, it was well worth the seven hours. This looks better than your normal coloring!
Thanks.
Adding my 2 cents to the ‘this looks awesome’ crowd. Even if you’re not going to do the comic like this, I hope you make some wallpapers or special comics like this from time to time.
I guess I will, since everyone likes this so much.
I just realized you read and reply to nearly every comment… I don’t know how I feel about this :I
You should like totally ignore that.. I did not do my research properly.
I read every comment. I only reply to about 5%.
I feel like Carlos should be a red shirt in a Star Trek series, but with just enough importance to redirect his red-shirt powers to people around him.
I love how the amount of time it took to make this comic went from 7 to 10 to 15 hours. And, I must say, here’s my voice of praise to add to the pile in the comments section: “Wow. This is… just… friggin’ awesome… How else should I describe this colour (I’m British. Deal with it) thingamabobadingjohn. I’m not very artistic…”
Well, just to be clear… the coloring took about 7 hours, but the entire strip was about 10 (including drawing, writing, lettering and all the rest). The 15 hour comment I made was my guess at how much extra time every week I’d have to work to do the strip with markers, which would be about an extra 5 hours per strip. Does that make sense?
