-This strip doesn’t have much of a punchline, but this is something that actually happens to me a lot. I have a really irregular sleep schedule. I usually work at night and I’m often up until 7 or 8am, but sometimes I’ll get on a day schedule, and sometimes I’ll be on a weird 30 hour day/6 day week schedule. There’s been plenty of times where I’ll fall asleep for an hour, wake up thinking I’ve slept all night and go back to work only to crash hard a few hours later because I didn’t get enough sleep. Years ago when I was a Pokemon Gym Leader I would sometimes come home late after a super long shift and collapse in bed, only to wake up a half hour later thinking it was morning and time to go back to work. There were a few times where I made it as far as the bus (and once all the way to work) before I realized that it wasn’t actually super early in the morning before sun rise but still the same night.
– I’ll be at the Beaverton Library Mini Con on Free Comic Day Saturday May 2nd from 10am-1pm. I did this last year and it was a lot of fun. I’ll be giving away stickers and selling books. Come by and check it out!
– I’ll also be at TCAF in Toronto (Canada!) on May 9th and 10th. Find me in the kids section? I think? Anyway, if you live in Toronto please come see me. I’ve never been in that part of Canada before!

What’s bad is staying up until 1:00 in the morning and still not being able to get to sleep.
Don’t you have a clock??
When I’m not working–well, when I don’t have a scheduled not-at-home job–I inevitably get my schedule flipped around so I’m awake at night. Eventually it flips back again so that I naturally wake up at 6 in the morning. And then it flips again. And so on. This is incredibly awful when they’re mowing the lawn.
So I’m more likely to sleep 12 hours. Never been awake more than 24 hours, though. I rarely make it past 18. But it’s really easy to keep the momentum of being awake or asleep going.
It’s really easy to just ignore the alarm clock and not actually see what time it is.
Especially after having only one hour of sleep.
My dad never sleeps well so he has to have his alarm clock use some kind of lazer that shows up over his head so when he wakes up he can see what time it is. Really big fan of this comic I try to read it every day thanks for writing these comics everyday jake
Well, it’s not everyday. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to manage that. But thanks for reading.
I remember when I was little I made the mistake of taking a nap, and I woke up at about 7. I was too young and dumb to know the difference between AM and PM so I thought it was morning and I had slept for the night. I went and got myself breakfast (cereal) since nobody else was about and received a shock when the rest of my family returned from karate class. I get so disoriented from naps, as my brain resets for the next day… Friends don’t let friends take naps.
Yeah, I often find naps to be temporally disorienting too.
I do not recall being eager to go to school… nope not even once!
Modest is especially cute in panel-4… and 3, and 2… the snakes are extra cute in panel-1!
Usually my first thought upon waking is: how much more sleep can I get?
Even if it means slapping the Snooze Button several times…
It’s a matter of habit. If you get into the habit of checking the time when you wake up, that would help.
I’ve gotten into that habit since I started sleeping at rather odd times (long story).
Sounds like how I was on Christmas Eve night.
Now, when you say gym leader, do you mean for TCG leagues ?
Yeah. I worked for Wizards of the Coast for a few years running leagues and tournaments.
That’s cool.
awwww that’s as adorable as it is relatable. I often have trouble telling what time it is.. my sleepiness varies all night
Oh YEAH, that happens to me a lot too!
Especially when I’m excited about something really exciting, like Christmas morning, or Saturday morning, knowing the car is all packed and ready for the race track. Those make for some long nights.
This reaction is likely very, very typical for a new student who is anticipating a whole school full of potential new friends and playmates.
Our life lately.
I wake up when I need to, no alarm. Of course, I’m retired!
Also happens a lot if you’re waiting for something.
Your first paragraph (except the part about being a Gym Leader) sounds very much like me – I don’t have any particular sleep cycle set in stone or whatever… I go to bed when I’m tired, and wake up when I’ve gotten enough rest. If not for life going on around me, I think I’d fall into a 20-hour-awake/10-hour-asleep thing.
Any parent (or anyone who works with kids) can tell you this is quite common.
Also, it’s so adorable that one of the snakes is still asleep in panel 2! ♡
