Hi everyone! I’m excited to say that physical copies of the Mermaid Hunters box set are now available from the Modest Medusa Store! This is a 3+ player introductory set for the Yeld RPG, and includes everything you need to play. I think you’ll dig it! Nick and I made a quick unboxing video that you can check out.
Mermaid School? She went and made mermaid school a thing?
You too can learn how to mermaid.
A question from a Yeld-RPG-less person: do ordinary Earthlings even have magic power? Or does it need to be unlocked/acquired somehow?
Ordinary people (of both our world and Yeld) do not have magic powers. Magic doesn’t exist in our world. however, there are people with super powers (as we’ve seen in Ghost Kiss).
In Yeld spell casting is a learned skill, manipulating and channeling Yeld’s magical power with pre-written spells. Most people can learn how to do this with some training, although most who learn aren’t good at it. if you travel to Yeld you can learn to cast spells, and if you really work at it you may be good at it.
Some people, like Mermaids, have a strong connection to some of Yeld’s magic (Mermaids are all strongly connected to the Deep, which is a very powerful source of magic). So Mermaids can easily cast spells, and learn a bunch of different spells when they are young. Jenny’s “legs” spell is one of those. The simple spell she uses to make fire is another. But Jenny runs out of magic fast here in our world, and it takes awhile for it to “refill”. Probaby because she’s either generating it herself or channeling it all the way from Yeld. I’m not sure.
Lots of Monsters in Yeld also are very naturally connected to sources of magic, and many of them know a kind of instinctive and reflexive spell casting that allows them to create magical effects without referring to a pre-written spell. Hydra are like this. They have a very powerful connection to the Serpent God, and a lot of raw magical energy that can manifest in a number of spell-like ways. But they traditionally also learn spells to help focus and control this. Thats what Naga was trying to teach Modest and Ecksbocks, and that’s what the spell book she gave Modest is all about.
So Jenny is going to guide Modest through that spell book and teach her to cast spells. But they are very far from Yeld, and their connection to the Serpent God’s magic is probably weak. So who knows how it will go?
We’ll see if someone from our world (Like Ekans) can actually learn spell casting here. It may be that all the study and patience in the world isn’t enough when you’re so far removed from the magic’s natural source, and you weren’t born with the talent.
Don’t have the Yeld RPG myself, but if I had to guess, Earthlings are probably capable of magic but can’t really learn how to do it without a teach that isn’t from Earth.
Can a normal human child even learn Yeld magic?
Just answered in another comment. Maybe.
I see there’s a hint of dishonesty under da sea of guised responsibility. Can’t say I blame her though, I’d so want to learn magic, too, in that opportunistic yet risky position.
I’m not an expert on little girls, but I’m pretty sure they will always pick mermaids over pianos.
Best case scenario: your child doesn’t pick up a smoking habit.
Worst case scenario: your child learns how to conjure explosive fireballs.
Do the multicolored speech bubbles have any significance?
I decided to give Modest a Greenish Blue bubble and Ekans a Pink one, just to help readers understand who is speaking. Its something I do in Ghost Kiss, and I think it will help here too.
Speaking of Ghost Kiss, how’s it going? No rush, just curious.
Welllll.
I have two Ghost Kiss stories that are written and penciled, but need to be inked, colored and lettered. One from early 2020 and one from early this year. Early this year my plan was to do a new Ghost Kiss every 3 months, but that has just not happened. Medusa and Yeld stuff keeps me busy, but the real issue is my income took such a big hit from teh pandemic that I’ve had to fill al my free time with freelance work and commissions. So I haven’t had any time for other projects, or even really normal Medusa stuff I like doing. Its very frustrating for me. My original plan was to be close to the end of season two of Ghost Kiss by now, and really I’m barely half was through season 1.
I hope to finish up my two partially done stories this year.
