– Today is the last day for the art contest, so get your drawings to me before midnight! I’ve got some really great entrees already, and I plan on showing them off on Friday!
– The Modest Medusa Season 2 Kickstarter is less than $100 from reaching it’s first stretch goal! The deal is that for every $1000 we make beyond our original goal I’ll do an extra 3 page comic for the book featuring some of the Modest Medusa supporting cast, like Jake, Urano, Charles, and the snakes. My hope is that we can get 5 or 6 of these funded before the Kickstarter ends!
It’s getting real-er by the minute I see XD … Seems like dad-dusa left mom-dusa and she’s taking it out on her children XD Haha oh man, poor sis-dusas.
Cannibal snake ladies!
Huh. Expected more gore. That’ll come in time, I guess.
Isn’t a chainsaw unicorn goring the hero enough!?
I wonder what would happen to Momdusa if Medusa’s snakes bit her? Hmmm…
And what time zone are you talking about for the midnight deadline?
It’s a soft deadline, so soon is good enough.
Okay. Cuz I just finished a large espresso to keep me going on this thing. Where do I send it?
You can post a link here or send it to my email found on the about Jake page
Kinda getting a bit dark for a cute web comic, is this another dream? (I hope) I thought she called and was angry at her, what gives? *_*
agreed. whats worse is i have a feeling louis is behind this. im now slightly sad that jakes my teacher and half the class gives him ideas.
Damn when season 2 began i assumed Momdusa would be left alive because she was Medusa’s mother but after this I’m assuming theres no redemption…. but then again i still don’t entirely believe it’s mom. but whatever it is those poor medusas…. good thing i grabbed one a few comic comments ago
She is such an abusive parent.
RUN MEDUSA!!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!!
Why do you do this JAKE ?!?!?!
It is so CRUEL!!!! 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁
13000 = bonus jake comic better do some more spreading the word.
I just had a strange thought….. is Momdusa a constrictor or venomous snake? She looks more like a constrictor than a venomous!
I… don’t know. She’s a magic snake.
I’m guessing she’s one, the other, or both whenever she wants to be.
if she is anything like her kid venomous as her bite poisons them with stone
I kinda feel bad for reccomending the kickstarter to people now because if they come to the comic during this story Arc they may be put off by the Adorable Medusa murders. Perhaps this story arc should have started after the kickstarter finished?
I was kind of nervous about this as well. Oh well. I just hope that when the season is over and this story is complete readers can feel this scene was add to the story in a positive way.
I love modest medusa, and how cute they are. But I also must say I am loving this arc. Dark or no, it’s nice to have such a good story. Now I want to sew a whole bunch of medusa plushies. O_o
Thanks. Plushies someday.
I’m glad I’m not scaring you guys off with this story. It’s been a hard thing to draw.
Please finish this arc as soon as possible. o_O
Wow…Talk about an ABUSIVE parent O_o?
Kinda of reminds me of a few one liners from the Adams Family. >_<
Very Anime-ish with the story twist.
For those not familiar with Japanese Anime … this sort of thing is common in almost every Anime … but it almost always leads to further story development … so lets see where this is headed.
You say that, and yet I can’t think of a single anime which features a parent devouring their children.
I can, but it’s not a common thing. I mean, it’s a fairly common thing in fairy tales (which is what I was going for), but I can only think of two instances in anime and manga where a parent eats it’s child. I’m sure there’s more though. Maybe he meant the twist was “very anime”, not the child eating?
Wow, this makes the Chainsaw Unicorn comics look to have all the darkness of an episode of Sesame Street.
This kind of reminds me of the Uber-Dragon from How to Train Your Dragon & how it would eat the other, smaller dragons that displeased it. Though, obviously, that wasn’t as dark as this, since the dragons weren’t calling it “mommy” & begging it not to hurt them.
As ridiculous as it sounds, I can’t help but imagine Medusa going into a Super-Sayan-ish state (Golden Snake-Hair sticking straight up and everything) and going all “Fist of the North Star” on mother right before she eats Sisdusa #80291. Though I imagine that’s probably not going to happen.
Don’t forget the snake hair Kame-hame-has! 🙂
I have three words for you:
VORE VORE VORE. 😀
I don’t see how anyone could be turned off by this, I certainly ain’t. So keep going, Jake, you’re doing a wonderful job.
I would have to agree, the third season rocks so far. A little dark never hurts, it keeps things interesting. And best of all, keeps you wanting to know what happens next.
I wasn’t turned off till you mentioned vore. O_o
Baaaww, what a shame. Maybe you can fix this by not thinking about the word vore anymore, starting now. …I mean, now, since I happened to just mention vore again. And again! I’m just no good at this.
You’ll have to get yourself turned back on on your own, I’m afraid.
Well, so much for Mother-of-the-Year…
Only the strongest may survive the wrath of MOM!!!
I don’t know why people are freaking out so much, my mum would always eat us alive when we woke her up from her nap too.
The dialogue – it’s like you just copied the script from “Mommie Dearest”.
I suspect this basic script is in fact an archetype embedded in the global subconscious… It is repeated in so many places, and yet it always feels like the first time. To me, anyways. Wish I could recall some other examples. Many popular webcomic authors seem to grasp these archetypes well, and use them in their scripts whether they realize it or not. I think the scene in Walle where Walle is repaired but has lost it’s memory is another example. I’ve seen this theme in animes, cartoons, etc. And always, it has the same effect, on me at least.
Shouldn’t Medusa’s sisters be immortal?
According to Greek Mythology, Medusa was the only Gorgon that wasn’t immortal. Thats why Perseus was able to use her stare against her and behead her.
The other two sisters, Stheno, and Euryale were immortal however, and were unable to be killed. However, as this comic is all medusas, they would all be mortal.
That’s a good point. I decided to use “Medusa” as both a name for the main character and a description of what she is, even though both are inaccurate. She’s not the Medusa from Greek mythology obviously, and she is a Gorgon. Or at least she probably is. Her mother was called “The Gorgon” by Dragul’s Knights. It may just be a title though. Their race may be called something else.
I kinda figured modern mythology went out the window when she came through a toilet. 😛
Momdusa is clearly not a morning person.
Sounds like the screams you’d here from the home of an abusive mom. Speaking of which, if this strip was better timed it would have came out around Mother’s day instead of Father’s.
Where can I get the season three book?
In the future. Season 3 won’t be done till close to the end of this year. There’s currently a Kickstarter for the season 2 book. You can see the link on this page in my comments under the comic. You can also order the season 1 book from my store.
Of course, the other question is with so many medusas around that they could afford to have mom munch on a few dozen from time to time. Why did the kingdom even bother to try to fetch one sneaked out one day?
I’m guessing it’s to show what happens when someone, intentionally or otherwise, defies them.
Here’s another dark thing to stew over, what happens to the remains of the Medusas (Medusae, Medusi?) once mother is done with them?
Assuming she doesn’t have a Meatwad-esque stomach & simply absorbs everything, then there probably would be a bunch of, um, parts lying about, probably enough to form a small army of undead Medusas. Considering Mom works with a bunch of vampires, odds are at least one of them is a necromancer (or has some knowledge in that area), so a mob of mindless, Zombie and/or Skeletal Medusas isn’t much of a stretch (albeit a very disturbing one) if you stop and think about it. Waste not, want not, & all that.
That is a disturbing thought.
2 days untill friday im gonna chew you out BIG TIME.
ill chew you out with PONYS (dundunduuunn)
…am I seriously the only one who thinks that is only a hair-snake thing for momdusa? And that her actual head is much bigger?
Do little medusas taste like chicken? Or Chocodiles?
“In Season 3 Marah Will be A complete Badass complete with the Sarcastic Charm we’ve all grown to know and love. Jake will Megaton Punch No less then 3 Badasses. Medusas will learn an terrifying secret. Chainsaw Unicorn will fake his death again or try but get stopped by Jake. And Medusa will start a massive protest when Hostess announces it’s discontinuing Chocodiles.
These are my predictions!”
Looks like I was right about one prediction so far
Jake, great storytelling. All the best fairytales were/are dark affairs. Don’t Disneyfy the story out of fear of alienating readers looking for cute Medusa.
Ee yeah I had some reservations about reading this comic after the mother woke up and started chomping on snakes. Then I read the comments, I didn’t know what vore meant so I googled it… Should not have done that… So I’m sad to say I won’t be reading this comic for awhile. At least till the snake chomping is done or so. No hard feelings just not something I’m into. Good luck with the launch.
I can understand that. the next strip is the end of the short “Mother” arc. It was meant to be upsetting, and it was difficult to draw. I hope that in the context of the larger story you’ll see that it’s worthwhile.
…and that’s why I’ve always been disturbed by people who say, “You’re so cute I could just eat you up!”. 😉
I know, right?
You have got to come to Chicago for Windy Con Jake! Total zombie goodness, or badness, whatever! Plus you rock and I wanna meet you!
Chicago? That’s in November, right? Maybe.
Personally, I find the dialogue on this page far more disturbing than the imagery.
I have no intention of leaving, mind you; I *gotta* find out what’s going on!
I tried hard to make it sound that way. I know some people have said it just sounds silly, but I still cringe when I read it.
It went from funny and cute to REALLY dark, creepy and disturbing.
It’s like reading School Rumble and it slowly turning into Battle Royal.
I thought I was reading the next Garfiled, I guess I was wrong, too creepy for me to go on reading…
The next Garfild?
Anyway, I hope you come back and gibe it another try at some point.
I meant something to read at work during lunch break or with a kid (I recomended to a friend with a kid, she’s not happy lol), something funny to take my mind of my job.
It gues I miss-read the mood of the comic since the start, the fight with the mermaids was when I started feeling it wasn’t the comic for me.
P.S. Might want to add a “not for children” somewhere, the art could decieve parents into thinking it’s safe for their kids.

I mean, it starts out funny and cute and then we get in dismemberments, death and cannibalism…
this..is actually pretty hard for me to read…
Same here. I usually avoid anything that puts children in bad situations. That’s why I refuse to watch Naruto or Attack on Titan.
I’m rereading this series. This scene is not any easier the second time…
That’s actually good to hear. It was rough to write and draw.
