– Late again!? Sorry everyone. Abnormal heat and some urgent chores has kept me from work yesterday and today. You can expect a larger than normal update on Friday.
– Also, I’m out of reader submitted”Late again!?” Medusas. You can download the file here and edit and color it in any way you like. Send it to me (along with your name and any site you want me to link to ) at Yeldstuff@gmail.com!
I thought with all this lockdown and confinement, some comic artists would be more productive…but, really, it hasn’t happened. (On the other hand, “White Noise” put up a new comic the other day, first time in two years…)
Well… I’ve been trying. But I still get sick, and stuff still comes up. This week the heat was so bad that I couldn’t sleep, and then after walking to the post office on foot to deliver packages I was just heat sick and exhausted, and couldn’t really make the 45 minute walk to work. It sounds lame, but I don’t handle heat well. I can walk anywhere in the cold and snow.
Something to consider: A LOT of comics people have seen their income drastically cut during the pandemic (and nearly all of us are ineligible for unemployment assistance), but still have to produce work at the same schedule. For example, between loss of patrons, loss of convention income and loss of general store sales I’ve seen my monthly income reduced by a little over 40%. Which puts me well below what I need to make every month to survive. So like a lot of artists, I’m scrambling to find freelance work, commissions or anything else. And doing that stuff means I’m often working an extra 20-40 hours a week, on top of my normal work load (which hasn’t been reduced at all, despite my cut to income).
From my own experience, and the experience of my friends who make comics, it seems like most comic creators work between 40 and 70 hours a week. Keep in mind, actually drawing comics is only part of what we have to do every week. And Covid hasn’t given us any free time at all.
And keep in mind, I did produce the same amount of content this week that I produce on any week. It just all came on Friday instead of being split between Monday and Friday.
And Robert, I’m not trying to chew you out. I’ve just been thinking about this a lot this week, and your post seemed like a good place to bring it up.
People who’ve never tried to be their own boss are probably only peripherally aware of all that.
Also, I know a few people who have serious issues with heat. For whatever reason, their bodies don’t regulate well enough. So the struggle is real!
Hi Jake,
Hope you’re doing better now. Which font do you use for “Late again”, or is it handwritten?
Thanks! I think its the same font I use for the comic. ACME Secret Agent.
