Well… Deep Mages is onlies *kind ofs* monsters, Emmy. Besides some effects of havings the Herald bonded wifs them, they’re *basicallies* their original species, but, well, you can see what that does to you physicallies, an’ you’re pledging your service to the Deep for as long as either you ors Dragul lives, whichever is shorters. Still, some people are desperate enough to avoids a more drastic transformation they’ll takes that.
So they abduct children under the deep’s command, well you did say that the mermaid’s were very amoral, and it looks like all that comes from the deep. Did the mermaid’s go to the non-Yeld world and abduct a human child so that the deep could learn more or did it seek out a competent human adventurer who ended up in Yeld?
The Herald is part of their unit. Its also a soldier of the Deep. The Mermaids are shock troops and infiltrators, so patrols and boarding parties are their specialty. They’re sometimes assigned other assets. Heavily armored Spquidmen. Deep Mages. OctoAssassins.
We talk about Deep Mages in the Yeld book a bit. becoming a Deep mage means surrendering yourself to teh Deep and eventually losing antonomy (although victims are rarely offered a choice). But the Deep is powerful enough to stave off Yeld’s magic. Kids who become Deep mages don’t become monsters.
The night sky makes me wonder — would the constellations be familiar? And the Moon?

The later. Most kids from our world who end up in Yeld come through one of the Prince’s doors. Marah is an exception.
