– Some of you were pretty upset at Jenny’s response to Ekans last strip. I thought that was funny, since Jenny has always been pretty awful. But her comment about learning to sword fight wasn’t just a dismissal. As some of you may remember, the Mermaids of Yeld were created by the Deep to be soldiers in a war against Prince Dragul. Mermaids are kind of terrifying. They’re stronger than humans and can fight just as well on land as in the water. They also can breed with local populations, and the results are always more Mermaids. The implications of that as a war strategy are of course terrifying. Anyway, traditionally Mermaids get two career paths, mage or soldier. Of course, the war is long over now and Mermaids live all over Yeld and lead all kinds of lives, but that binary is pretty built in to who they are. If you can’t cast spells, you better learn to fight!

Hmmm. Mermaids have magic. What is the procedure for extracting magic, and does it involve involuntary surgery?
Wait. People were complaining because you’re maintaining a consistent story line?
Duh! Why am I asking that? Of course they are.
Jenny’s face here both being annoyed and slightly sympathetic made my day. I’m glad she tries at least a little to cheer Ekans up.
Awww, Meg looked so sad! I am glad both Jenny and Modest were kind to her and gave her some amount of hope.
… even if not all dreams are meant to be.
Well… there’s always friendship.
Well, since they live in a superhero style sci-fi-fantasy kitchen sink then wouldn’t that mean that she has a whole lot of other options for her? Like incredible works of science that you’d expect to see in science fiction?
Its not impossible. But that kind of stuff is pretty rare.
Hmm. I wonder if magic in this setting can be… ‘ignited’, I suppose. Mermaid hearts are a source of magic, right? Which means they have to create that source at some point, even if it’s shortly after gestation. Or possibly split off from their mother’s heart to reside in the child’s, passed on like any other nutrient.
So what if they see if it’s possible to sort-of create a source of magic for Ekans?
Bad idea? Possibly. Very dangerous? Probably. Would they try it if they think of it? Maybe.
There’s always the go to Yeld and becoming a mage there route. Granted, it’s not a good idea if you have to worry about turning into a monster and getting stuck there.
Well, that only happens after the 13th bday iirc, so Ekans would have several years to learn magic and come back.
All I wanna do

All I wanna be

And, of course, a freaking typo ruined it!
