– I’ll be at Cherry City Comic Con in Salem this weekend tabling with Jaymz Bernard, Brian Wolf and Dax Riley. Come check us out!
– Also, please check out the Kickstarter for the Caribbean Blue art book. Renaldo put together a great artbook for his great webcomic, and invited a bunch of really coola rtists to contribute (including me!). If you like webcomics or catgirls please check it out!
– If you’re enjoying Modest Medusa or any of my other comics please consider giving a monthly donation through Patreon. Patreon is super easy to use and allows you to support content creators that you like. Right now a majority of my income comes from readers like you through Patreon, and I appreciate every bit of it. I want to be spending my time making comics instead of working a job I hate just to make ends meet, and your support through Patreon allows me to do that. Even a dollar or two a month helps! Jake, if this were a cartoon who would you want to have voice the characters?
Very good question (and something I’ve been thinking a lot about recently). Unfortunately I don’t have good answers. So many of the characters are based on real people, it’s very difficult for me to imagine them sounding like anyone else. Melissa Galsky (Melissa from Home Movies) would probably be my choice for Marah. I had though that Kristen Schaal would be my perfect Modest, but after hearing Sam Lavagnino doing Catbug on Bravest Warriors I think something like that would be better. Jake is a mystery to me.
Obviously you voice Jake yourself!
Good taste on the other choices. I can’t imagine Modest not being voiced by a real kid
I always thought the voice actor who did the original Bubbles from Powerpuff Girls would make a great Modest.
That would be the immensely talented Tara Strong. Among her many many other roles:
Twilight Sparkle – My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Harley Quinn – multiple versions
Timmy Turner – Fairly Odd Parents
Raven – Teen Titans
Ben Tennyson (Young) – Ben 10
Princess Clara & Toot Braunstein – Drawn Together
Rikku – Final Fantasy X
casting for kid rolls is hard because as much as we want it to be authentic kids grow up and animation takes a long time to produce so voices change it works for shows like avatar because we are seeing these character mature but for shows like hey Arnold they had to recast three time although that could have been because they just wanted a different voice actor with that said I love it when kids play kids and when I read the comic I imagine Lilos voice
I really think you should approach Cartoon Network with this. I think you have something here.
That would be nice. I’ve been kind of looking into creating version of MM that I could shop around and see if I could get a network (or whatever ) interested in producing it. That may be a project I focus on next year. This year is already very busy.
Oh thank goodness you are moving away from Kristen Schaal. Her voice really grates on me. I would have such a hard time listening to that!
Hopefully this will bring Modest, Gina and Meg closer together?
And Modest realizes the consequences of her (and her hair’s) actions. I think I was like twenty before I realized them for mine.
Well if it hasn’t started by now it’s not going to happen. I wonder why it didn’t work. I can think of a number of possible reasons but I wonder which is true.
I guess her magic does only work in Yeld.
I hope I can be that calm if I’m ever bitten by a snake.
So the theories about her stone powers only working in Yeld were true. But maybe something else might happen to Gina?
Also, you did a really good job at expressing Modest’s feelings through the drawings and dialogue. I felt sad with her. I’m a softy though, so… ;P
There is rarely such a thing as “just a snake bite”. Only posionous snakes bite.
What a luck that the lower levels of magic in this world seem to prevent the petrification.
Non-poisonous snakes will bite you too if you mess with ’em. Nasty teeth they have. Real gruesome results. Just FYI in case anyone’s keeping a python and hopes it’ll never bite ’em.. it might.
Mine’s bitten me, but I don’t think it was trying to hurt me. The rats have been far worse.
Non-poisonous snakes will bite you too. 4-H used to have a “snake bite club” they did at their wildlife camps. They would fill a sack full of non-poisonous snakes and you stick your hand down in it to get bitten. The snakes usually bit quickly, because they were pissed off at being shaken around in a sack. The _idea_ was to show that snakes aren’t scary and bites don’t hurt that badly, but it was frankly insane. While the whole thing was voluntary, they no longer do it.
I’ve been bitten by garter snakes. It hurts (their teeth are like little needles), but really is “just a snake bite” 🙂
List of theories as to why she isn’t turning to stone.
1) Not enough snake bites (Looks like all four last time)
2) Not all the snakes are venomous
3) The snake have some how not recovered it’s venom from the last time
4) It doesn’t work on non magical creatures
5) It only works in Yeld
6) Now that she is aware of it Modest has more control over it
7) The snakes can choose whether or not they inject their venom or if it works
8) Jennifer’s training helps her better control her magic
9) Gina stabbed herself with something to fake it (Unlikely but possible)
Well, real snakes can control whether they venom or not.
Because running out is a problem. Making complex chemicals takes energy. So if they aren’t using it to hunt, they prefer to just give a ‘warning shot’ to tell other creatures not to tread on them.
This wasn’t the first time.
Why does nobody else remember? 😛
I remember. I just assumed the snakes could control who they stone depending on how desperate they are.
People probably do remember, but Jake said that Marah didn’t turn to stone because he forgot about the hair turning people to stone with a bite.
“There’s absolutely no good reason for this except that I forgot, which is embarrassing since I drew these strips during the same week that I did the sequence in Season 2 where the purple mermaid gets turned to stone!”
True. I’ve “No Prized” a cannonical explanation since then though.
Nice! I hadn’t heard the use of the phrase “No prize” since I was a kid reading Marvel comics in… dang, the 80s.
I used to write in and try to win one.
I remember that. Jake just forgot about it at the time. We could say the snakes dry bite when they’re mad.
it’s just a snake bite, I think that’s the only time thoughs words have been said
Theory: Gina’s been bitten by medusa’s so many times she’s developed an immunity!
“Just a snake bite”??? Does she have a pet snake or something. Even then, I think most people would panic at the 4 fang holes. That’s how you can usually tell a snake who bit you is venomous—nonvenomous snakes usually have lots of little sharp teeth and leave what look like hundreds of pin pricks in the shape of their jaws.
Okay so I was wrong about the several pages thing, but seriously, just a snake bite Meg?
To everyone saying “Just a snake bite”!?
Yeah. To some kids, it really is “just a snake bite”. Especially if you live (or have lived) in the country side and messed with garden snakes. Not everyone is a city rat their entire life and never encounter wild life in the actual wild.
Living in a small town in rural Maine, surrounded by actual woodland, this is a normal response.
At least it doesn’t seem like Gina’s still angry at Modest for that bite.
