Thinking on it now, yeah, I can see where Andrew got the idea from. Apron and head handkerchief plus the “skin” tone combines with her mannerisms and body type to create the “Mammy” archetype. Probably go for an apron with a pattern for when she *has* to have one, and lose the head handkerchief, and that should help a lot
Panel 2 REALLY strikes the archetype visually, so you may want to avoid hand on hip like that during the times where she would have an apron on
Its interesting because thats not what I was going for at all. The character is based on my mom, including her mannerisms and speech. My mom is from the South, so that may lend a little to this. The outfit is actually based on costumes from Fiddler on the Roof, although I went with darker colors.
She seems like a perfectly fine character to me. No need to cater to the overly sensitive types that search for reasons to get offended by things that aren’t actually offensive in the first place.
I didn’t get any bad vibes from the character – I mean she is a strange creature, was singing strange songs – but she is also being kind to take care of Mara.
I can’t help feeling like this character might be just a little… insensitive. U _U; I mean, she just seems like a stereotype Southern black grandma.
Oh? That wasn’t what I was going for at all! She’s based on my mom.
Hmm. I’ll take this into consideration going forward.
