Sounds rotten, having to wait that long to get paid.
I guess it keeps you from jumping ship.
It… was usuallies how it worked for pirates. Paid ins shares of the booty when the voyage was done. Also, usuallies, Captain was an electeds position that could be changed any time out ofs crisis, but you see that rarelies in fictional stuffs, while you do sees accurate pay handlings in somes stuff. (Likes the Sid Meier’s Pirates games.)
Lol, she’s racist against mermaids now, and they’re apparently all known smokers too. Also I looked up ratscrew and apparently it’s called egyptian ratscrew, (with name variants but always with egyptian first but then starting with rat.) why isn’t it just called ratscrew?
Yeah, her one experience with Mermaids was very bad, so now she has preconceived notions. She’ll need to learn better eventually.
I’ve seen several names for the game, including the ‘Egyptian’ variants, Jungle Speed, Slap, Roundtable and more. IDK what it was originally called. I’m suspicious of any source that claims to know the original name, since thats probably just the name they learned the game under. The game itself seems to be as old as the 80’s.
I would not have expected the Pi-Rats to smoke.
Reasoning:
Matches, according to the handbook, are needed for using guns
Modern red phosphorous matches as depicted in the comic cannot be conventionally manufactured without industry.
Most people who travel to Yeld do so as children
Most children don’t or at least shouldn’t have large amounts(or any amounts) of matches)
Possiblities:
Someone on Yeld makes matches through industry as we know it:
probability: Medium (The goblins are around aren’t they)
There is far more industrialization than we are aware of:
Probability: Reasonable (Jake might do a giant steampunk factory city thing, that sounds like great expansion material)
Jaspar is the only person allowed to smoke this way, everyone else waits for some other source of ignition.
Probability: Dubious (I can’t see them trading cigarettes they can’t smoke unless they know that and that’s why they’re willing to gamble them)
Someone on Yeld is conjuring matches:
Probability: Reasonable (They make the cigarettes don’t they)
Matches just fall into Yeld from the real world along with left socks and other small things we keep losing
Plausibility: High (Yeld is very much a world in the closet/under the couch cushions etc)
Good conjecture.
Some city in Yeld manufactures and exports matches. Possibly Sarensang. Probably not the kind shown here, but I drew that kind for clarity. Many people in Yeld simply use magic or some kind of magical lighter instead of magic. We’ve seen Jenny use magic in exactly this way before. Goblins may sell zippo lighters or matches from our world, since they appear to have regular access to our world.
If a mermaid shows up, she can bribe it to go away!

I imagine rats would have this instead of matches.
Oh, yeah. probably. I should have done that.
I’m trying to remember if the Mara in real life is old enough to smoke. I was about to have this conversation in the first part:
Stranger: It’s fine, your real life counterpart is old enough to drink
Mara: Wait, what
Stranger: *walks away vanishing after a few paces*
That would be funny.
RL Marah is 21.
