We’ve already learned that mermaid magic, so long as it isn’t all used up for the day, can create cigarettes.
So, Kate and Jen get busted by the BATF for starting a cigarette smuggling operation, because everyone in this strip ends up in jail at one time or another.
“So I tried to kill your daughter, but I’m reeeeaaaally sorry about it! May I crash on your couch? Also, may I bum a smoke?”
“…And I need to make a long distance call.” 😛
“… to another dimension…” 😛
Well, they do both have a lot of tension that needs to be relieved…
As long as it’s not sexual tension… that would just be creepy!

But… he’s married.
I think this is the first time Jake’s sister hasn’t had a scowling looking face. She looks very likable (and young) when she’s not angry.
And that’s how Patty and Selma were born
They both appreciate evil free smokables!
Complements on this strip as well…
Since there is not a lot of action, Jake could have drawn the first three cells all the same or similar, but he did not take the easy way out. The different poses show the interaction between the two speakers very well, and grab viewer interest.
And the last cell has a subtle humor that is quite fetching.
