– Only a little late today! being late on Mondays (or skipping them entirely) has become a bad habit the last month. There was nothing special behind today’s delay except my sleep schedule is a bit off. So I might be doing afternoon updates this week instead of mornings.
– Oh, and happy Gay Marriage to all my fellow Americans!

I don’t think it’s fair that she keeps getting detention for things that she doesn’t even know that she’s doing wrong… It seems a little like she’s mostly getting detention because it makes a good punchline.
Agreed. The teacher should not be immediately concluding that Modest is intending to be disruptive. A true teacher would be leading her through conversation toward understanding, or at the very least suggesting that they discuss it later so not to derail the lesson. Once again, were this the school where I teach, she would have been fired long ago.
I agree. It’d be funnier if she was older or if she was doing things that were really naughty for her age. The teacher just comes off as a jerk.
True enough. Punishment doesn’t actually do a good job of correcting behavior.
“Go stand in the corner and think about what you’ve done wrong!”
“…Um, no. I’m going to go stand in the corner and think about how you’re just a jerk abusing your power on those who can’t fight back.” — Every Kid Who’s Ever Been Sent To The Corner.
Of course it’s done for a punch line! This is a comic strip after all, not real life…
Right Real Jake? This isn’t auto-biographical, you don’t have a REAL Modest living with you… riiiight?
Monster Musume the Anime next week! Woot!
Blasphemy this is all based on true events
That teacher is kind of a jerk. Or at least has really bad perspective
And speaking of perspective, Ima be nice and just ignore the rest of what you posted.
Let’s pray Modest’s fighting spirit will prevail. Giving detention for one remark is close to abuse. It’s as if school was for teachers, not for children. May Modest be stronger than all attempts to break her ( : Stupid teach woman is stupid!
It’s a bad punchline and not really all that great a parallel to how teachers regularly run class… at least not how they ran it in my day…
That was a while ago…
ok that is enough, this teacher isn’t being fair. Modest clearly doesn’t understand what she is saying or what she is supposed to be doing at school. also in this grade it is not this easy to get detention, seriously she is a little girl. besides every kid of all ages complains about the boring classes, this woman should not be a teacher.
Well it is safer than sending her out in the snow, seeing as she is cold-blooded.
Was computer even on that spelling list?
This comic really reminds me of Calvin and Hobbes. Immediately after reading it I thought of this one.
Congratulations USA on marriage equality! Now I just hope Straya catches up soon
To be fair, by getting all that detention she is learning the only real lessons that school teaches you.
I’m sympathetic to Modest here. Besides experiencing social dynamics and hierarchy, all school teaches you is how to take tests. The best lessons are taught through life experiences.
What grade is this, anyway? First grade?
First grade
Technically, yes, all that reading, writing, arithmatic is forgotten pretty quickly and ceases to be relevant once school is done with you.
But it’s actual purpose is biological. Brain cells start off with enormous numbers of links to their neighbors (too many, really), and through school, connections are strengthened, pathways are established, and methods of thought are refined. Connections that aren’t used weaken and decay, and they don’t come back, leaving closed pathways and harder thought processes. It’s this forging of complex thought that is important.
So yeah, you don’t learn much from school, in the long term. But you wouldn’t be able to think the way you do now without it.
That’s actually really interesting! I don’t suppose you can link me to a source, please?
Well, cartoon Jake’s world isn’t quite our world: chainsaw unicorns, toilet portals, toothers (or whatever name), police arresting a victim whose arm was cut off as a murderer?!?!?
I’m willing to watch for now and see what happens. I think it will clarify.
Shouldn’t detention be white if it’s written in chalk?
Ugh. Yeah, that’s what I meant to do.
I’m gonna be honest, Jake should homeschool her. =/ It’s not like he has to do “Scholl at home”. All he has to do is Unschool her. Take her interests, such as video games, and nudge her towards learning how to make video games. Start her off small, maybe a couple of YouTube videos concerning game design. Then move her towards programing and robotics. Grab some books that make math fun, all that kind of stuff.
i don´t think she got detention for disrupting – she did raise her hand after all – but for speaking the truth: most of the stuff they make you learn is utterly boring, and useless on top. i mean, think back to your school days and then think about what of that crap you´re actually needing/using today….20%, tops!
Which makes this a discussion point, a “teachable moment” as educators call them. Certainly not grounds for punishment.
Believe me, teachers are the first ones who’ll tell you that the system is broken. Don’t ever get one started on it, though, unless you’re ready for an earful.
Awww it’s okay modest, you’ll get the hang of it.
Also very happy for marriage equality, it’s been needing to happen! 🙂
Also big fan of modest!! I have drawn like three fan arts, and I can’t figure out how to send them. Not computer savvy much. ://)
Oh! Can you take a photo and post them somewhere and send me a link?
Actually, Medusa has a point. At least 80% of what I learnt was boring stuff I never needed in my life again, ever. The interesting 20% were subjects where the teaching was sooooo slow, so everyone could keep up, like Math, Physics and Music.
Those 80% merely taught me how to learn stuff for tests and then forget them mere hours later. It WAS a really useful skill when studying at a University, but it’s not something I need for actual life.
Also: Yes, it makes a good punch-line to get Medusa into detention for her question, but I agree with those who say that the teacher is too strict.
